Dog Cookies

The Perfect Snack for Your Pet

Baking is a fun and productive way to exercise measuring skills while applying a knowledge of fractions. It also makes an ideal gift for someone’s pet. These little bite-size treats are quite crunchy, which helps remove plaque from a canine’s canines (the pointy teeth). When properly stored in an airtight container the cookies can be kept for approximately 2 weeks. Makes about 2 dozen treats.

Ingredients

2 1/4 cups whole wheat flour
1/2 cup cornmeal
1/2 cup rolled oats
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce
2 tsp vanilla extract
2 eggs, beaten
3 tbsp  low-sodium peanut butter

Production

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C).

Line 2 large baking sheets with parchment paper.

In a large mixing bowl, combine the dry ingredients: whole wheat flour, cornmeal, rolled oats and baking powder.

ADD the water, applesauce, and vanilla extract.

Stir the eggs and peanut butter into the mixture.

On a floured surface, form the dough into a ball. With your hands, knead it until it isn’t sticky.

Use a rolling pin to flatten the dough to 1⁄4 inch thickness. Use cookie cutters to cut into small bite-size shapes.

Bake for 15 minutes. Turn the oven off and leave the treats in the oven for 30 minutes.

With adult supervision, remove the treats from the oven. Let them cool on the baking sheets for 10 minutes. Once completely cool, store in an airtight glass jar.
